How often should a chimney be inspected in the Seattle area?
Annual is the honest answer. Here is where that number comes from, what the once-a-year visit actually covers, which events do not wait for the calendar, and what applies to a chimney you rarely light.

Where the once-a-year figure actually comes from
The annual recommendation is not something the chimney trade invented for itself. It comes from NFPA 211, the National Fire Protection Association's standard for chimneys, fireplaces, vents and solid fuel-burning appliances. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) quotes the sentence directly when homeowners ask: chimneys, fireplaces and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances, with cleaning, maintenance and repairs done if necessary.
A second, unrelated body lands in the same place. The EPA's Burn Wise guidance states that fire officials recommend having the wood-burning appliance, chimney and vent professionally inspected each year, partly to look for chimney cracks that let smoke into the house or expose components to temperatures high enough to start a fire.
So the interval survives the obvious test. It is published by a consensus standards organization and repeated by a federal agency, neither of which sells inspections.
It is a recommendation, not a Washington legal requirement
Being well founded is not the same as being enforceable. NFPA 211 is a consensus standard, and it becomes law only where a jurisdiction adopts it. Adoption varies: some cities adopt the chimney standard directly as their code, and others rely on their residential and mechanical codes instead.
Practically, nobody is going to cite you for skipping a year. What the annual interval represents is the schedule a national standard sets for a system that vents combustion products through your house.
What the yearly visit is, and what it is not
Under NFPA 211 the annual inspection is a Level 1 — the lowest of the standard's three inspection types, and the one named for annual inspections, for routine cleaning of a flue, and for swapping in an appliance of similar type, input rating and efficiency. It covers the readily accessible parts of the chimney, its structure and its flue, plus the accessible parts of the connected appliance and the chimney connection.
What you burn, and how much, changes the answer
Once a year is the floor for looking. How fast the flue dirties between visits depends on how the fire is run. The EPA names four conditions that build creosote — the combustible black or brown residue left when wood smoke condenses on the cooler inner walls of a chimney — fastest: a restricted air supply, unseasoned wood, a chimney colder than normal, and an overloaded firebox. A household burning nightly through a wet Puget Sound winter is not on the same curve as one that lights a fire at Thanksgiving.
Manufacturers handle that variability with a check rather than an interval. Many wood stove manuals ask the owner to look at the chimney and connector at least monthly through the heating season, and to have creosote removed once it reaches about an eighth of an inch. Those instructions govern your specific appliance, so your manual outranks any general rule.
- A new, efficient stove does not buy you a year off. EPA-certified appliances burn cleaner and produce less creosote than older uncertified models, and the EPA and fire officials still recommend annual professional inspection and cleaning for them.
- Gas does not exempt a chimney either. CSIA states that gas-fired chimneys need annual inspection too: flues get blocked by bird nests and debris, and a modern furnace can run into trouble venting through a flue sized and built for older equipment. The EPA likewise puts gas stoves and gas fireplace inserts on an annual inspection.
Events that do not wait for the calendar
Some things move the next inspection to now, and raise the minimum from a Level 1 to a Level 2 — the level that adds everything reachable without demolition and requires the internal surfaces of the flue liners to be examined with image-scanning equipment. NFPA 211 lists the circumstances.
- The appliance changed. A connected appliance is added or removed, or replaced with one of dissimilar type, input rating or efficiency — swapping an open fireplace for an insert, for instance.
- The house is changing hands. The standard makes a Level 2 the minimum on sale or transfer of the property. Whether it is required of you is a separate question, set by your purchase-and-sale agreement and the locally adopted code.
- A liner is going in. The inspection comes before the relining. It is what establishes the flue size, the liner material and the condition the new system has to work with.
- Something happened to the chimney. A building or chimney fire, a weather or seismic event, or another incident likely to have caused damage. Windstorms and earthquakes are named in the standard itself.
The threshold there is lower than people assume: the wording is likely to have caused damage, not known to have. A windstorm that stripped shingles, or a shake strong enough to rattle the house, is reason enough to look early.
The chimney you never light still needs looking at
This is the case where the annual advice sounds most like a sales pitch, and it is the one CSIA addresses head on: the rule applies to all chimneys, including lightly used ones, because animals may nest in the flue and other deterioration can make a chimney unsafe. Nothing about a chimney's decay depends on you lighting a fire.
What keeps working on an idle chimney is water. Sea-Tac's 1991–2020 climate normals record about 156 days a year with measurable precipitation, roughly three quarters of the annual total falling from October through March. The same normals show about 25 nights a year at or below freezing — enough to work saturated masonry while the fireplace sits unused.
- Rain and animals get in the same way. CSIA's first listed defense against chimney water damage is a cap, which also keeps out birds and animals and acts as a spark arrestor. An open flue is an open pipe into the house.
- Capping is not the same as sealing. The National Park Service's moisture-control guidance recommends adding ventilated caps to unused chimneys that collect rainwater. The word ventilated is doing real work — closing a flue airtight can trap moisture inside it.
- The structure keeps aging either way. Crown cracks, failed flashing at the roof line, eroded mortar joints and spalled brick all progress on a chimney nobody uses.

- Nothing was wrong last year. Do I really need it looked at again?
- Yes — the interval is at least once a year regardless of last year's result. The annual check is for soundness, freedom from deposits and correct clearances, and all three change over a season: deposits accumulate, animals nest in quiet flues, mortar and crown surfaces weather, and a windstorm or seismic event can alter the picture between visits. A clean report is evidence about last year, not a forecast for this one.
- What time of year should the annual inspection happen?
- No standard names a month, so the practical answer is before the heating season rather than during it. Sea-Tac's 1991–2020 normals put roughly three quarters of the annual precipitation in the six months from October through March, with November the wettest at a 6.31-inch normal, so booking ahead of that window leaves room for any masonry or waterproofing work the inspection turns up to be done in drier weather.
