Chimney Cap Installation
Fitting a chimney cap that suits your flue and your weather
A chimney cap is the metal cover fitted over the flue opening at the top of the chimney. It is a small part that is easy to get wrong, because a cap that does not match the flue, the crown, or the weather stops working within a few winters.
The choices that matter are the type of cap, the mesh, the metal, and the fastening — and knowing which problems a cap genuinely solves before you buy one.

What a chimney cap does
Two parts at the top of a chimney get called the same thing. The crown is the sloped masonry slab that covers the brickwork and sheds water off the stack. The cap is the metal cover above the flue opening itself, usually a lid on legs with mesh sides. Building code uses "cap" for the masonry slab; the chimney trade uses it for the metal cover, and so does this page.
- Keeps rain out of the flue. An open flue is a vertical drain aimed at your damper, smoke chamber, and firebox. Water landing inside rusts steel and mixes with soot into an acidic slurry that attacks mortar.
- Keeps birds and animals out. A sheltered vertical shaft is good nesting habitat. Nesting material is both a blockage and a fire hazard, and animals that get in often cannot get back out.
- Arrests sparks. The mesh sides catch embers carried up the flue before they land on your roof or in landscaping.
- Helps with some wind problems. A lid breaks up wind blowing straight down the opening, which can settle a fireplace that smokes only on gusty days. That is a help, not a cure.
Single-flue, multi-flue, and full-coverage caps
Caps are sold by how much of the chimney top they cover. The right choice follows from how many flues you have, how far the flue tiles project above the crown, and whether the crown underneath is sound and overhangs the brick.
- Single-flue cap
- Sized to one flue tile and secured to the tile with set screws or a friction band. It shelters the flue only; the crown around it stays exposed.
- Multi-flue cap
- One lid spanning two or more flues, fastened to the crown or the outer masonry rather than to any single tile. It shelters most of the crown surface too.
- Full-coverage cap
- A cover fabricated to overhang the outside faces of the chimney, keeping rain off the crown and the top courses of brick. Often specified where the crown is already weathered.
- Wind-directional or draft-increasing cap
- Solid vanes, a rotating head, or a shaped body that uses passing wind to pull flue gases up. A targeted fix for persistent downdraft off a ridge, trees, or a taller part of the house — not a general upgrade.
Mesh, spark arrestors, and keeping animals out
The mesh does two jobs that pull against each other. Smaller openings exclude more animals and catch smaller embers. Larger openings pass more flue gas and are less likely to blind over with soot or ice. A screen that clogs does not simply stop working — it restricts the flue and can push smoke back into the room.
- Mesh is not an animal fix on its own. If something is already living in the flue, it has to be cleared first. Capping a flue with a nest still in it seals the problem inside.
- Insect screening is the wrong material. Window-grade screen blinds over with soot quickly and is not rated for flue temperatures. Arrestor mesh is specified by opening size and by the metal's heat and corrosion resistance.
- The mesh has to stay reachable. Screen that cannot be inspected or cleaned without cutting the cap apart becomes a maintenance problem every year.
Choosing metal for a wet, salt-influenced climate
A cap sits in the worst spot on the house: wet for half the year, washed by acidic flue condensate from the inside, and near the water exposed to salt-laden air. Corrosion resistance here is not a luxury specification, it is the service life of the part.
- Galvanized steel. Least expensive, shortest-lived. Its life depends on the zinc coating, and once that is breached at a cut edge, a fold, or a fastener hole, rust runs from that point. Rust streaks on the brick below a flue are usually a galvanized cap saying it is finished.
- Stainless steel. The usual specification for a cap meant to stay put. It handles both the weather outside and the acidic condensate inside, and it does not stain the masonry as it ages.
- Copper. Long-lived and often chosen where the chimney is visible from the street. It weathers to a patina and can run a green stain down light masonry, which some owners want and some do not.
- Aluminum. Light and soft, easily deformed by wind, and a poor match for the chemistry at a chimney top.
Correct fit and fastening
Most cap failures are fit and fastening failures rather than material failures. Close enough in a catalog is not close enough on a roof in a January gale.
- Measured, not guessed. Flue tiles vary in outside dimension, two tiles on one chimney are not always identical, and the crown footprint decides whether a multi-flue or full-coverage cover can land flat. Measuring comes before ordering.
- Enough height over the opening. The lid has to stand high enough above the flue that it does not restrict the outlet. A lid set too low chokes draft the same way a blinded screen does.
- Fastened mechanically. Single-flue caps clamp or bolt to the tile; larger covers anchor into the crown or grip the outside of the masonry. Sealant seals a joint, it does not hold a cap on — and any fastener driven into the crown is a hole in the surface that sheds your rainwater, so penetrations are placed and sealed deliberately.
- Removable for service. The cap has to come off again undamaged so the flue can be swept and inspected.
What a cap will not fix
A cap covers the flue opening. That is a real job, and it is the whole of the job. If water is entering elsewhere, or the draft problem is not a wind problem, a new cap changes nothing and should not be sold to you as a solution.
- A cracked or crumbling crown. The cap sits above the crown, it does not repair it — and a full-coverage cover still needs the crown sound enough to anchor into.
- Leaks at the roof line. Water tracking in where the chimney passes through the roof is a flashing problem with its own detailing.
- A damaged or missing liner. Nothing fitted at the top makes an unlined or cracked flue safe to use.
- Draft problems that are not wind. Smoking caused by flue sizing, a cold exterior flue, or negative pressure in a tight house is not solved by changing the cap.
- Debris already in the flue. A cap keeps new material out. It does not remove what is there, and it should not go on over an obstructed flue.
What the job includes
- Measurement of each flue outlet, the crown surface, and the chimney footprint before any cap is ordered
- A look at the condition of the crown, the top courses of masonry, and the flue tile the cap fastens to
- A written scope and price before work begins, with nothing started until you approve it
- Removal and disposal of an existing failed, rusted, or ill-fitting cap
- Supply and fitting of a cap sized to the flue and crown, mechanically fastened rather than sealed on
- A check that the mesh free area suits the appliance and that the cap can be removed again for sweeping
- Photographs of the chimney top before and after, from the same angles where practical
- A plain summary of anything else seen up there, marked as urgent, able to wait, or not worth doing
What it does not include
- Crown repair or replacement — a cracked, spalling, or overhang-less crown is chimney crown repair, and a cap is not a substitute for it
- Flashing work where the chimney passes through the roof — that is chimney flashing repair
- Water repellent applied to the masonry face — that is chimney waterproofing, which addresses absorption through the brick, not the flue opening
- Sweeping, creosote removal, or clearing an obstructed flue — that is a chimney sweep, and it has to happen before a flue is capped
- An inspection to an NFPA level, or an internal video scan of the flue — that is a chimney inspection
- Relining, liner repair, or the top plate and storm collar that belong to a lining system — that is chimney liner installation
- Roofing repairs, shingle replacement, or building a cricket behind the chimney
- Repointing, rebuilding, or any structural work on the stack — that is masonry repair or a rebuild
How the work goes
Look at the whole chimney top
The cap is assessed together with the crown, the flue tile projection, the top courses of brick, and the flashing, because a cap fastens to those surfaces and cannot compensate for them.
Confirm the flue is clear
A flue holding a nest, an animal, or heavy buildup is dealt with before anything goes over the opening.
Measure and specify
Each flue outlet and the crown footprint are measured, and the cap type, metal, mesh opening, and fastening method follow from those measurements and from the appliance the flue serves.
Put the scope in writing
You get a written scope and price for the cap and anything else recommended, separated into what is urgent and what can wait. Work starts once you approve it.
Prepare the mounting surface
The crown top or flue tile is cleaned off, loose material removed, and any fastener penetration placed where it will not create a new water path.
Fit and fasten
The cap is set square, fastened with clamps, set screws, or anchors as the type requires, and checked for adequate clearance above the flue outlet.
Check and photograph
Fit, clearance, mesh free area, and removability for future sweeping are checked, and the finished top is photographed from the same angles as the before shots where practical.
What to look for
- Water dripping into the firebox, or a damp, sooty smell for a day or two after rain
- Rain is reaching the inside of the flue. A missing or badly fitting cap is one of the first things to check.
- Rust streaks running down the brick from just below the flue opening
- A steel cap is corroding and shedding oxide down the chimney face. The staining tends to outlast the cap itself.
- A rusted, stiff, or seized damper
- Water has been running down the flue for some time. A cap stops the cause; the damper is a separate matter.
- Scratching, rustling, or chirping inside the chimney
- Something is living in the flue. It has to be cleared before the flue is capped, not after.
- Twigs, leaves, or nesting material in the firebox
- The flue is open at the top and collecting debris, which is both a blockage and a fire risk.
- The cap is tilted, lifted at one corner, or gone after a windstorm
- The fastening failed or was never mechanical. A cap held on by friction or sealant does not survive sustained wind.
- Mesh packed with soot, matted debris, or ice
- The screen is blinding over and restricting the flue outlet, which can push smoke back into the room.
- Smoke rolls back into the room only on windy days
- A wind-driven downdraft is a condition a wind-directional cap may address. Smoking in still air points elsewhere.
What changes the price
We do not publish a headline figure, because it would be a guess about your chimney. These are the things that genuinely move the number, and we put a real one in writing after we have looked.
- Number of flues to cover
- One flue can take a stock single-flue cap. Two or more on a shared crown push you toward a multi-flue or full-coverage cover, which is a larger fabricated piece.
- Cap type and how much it covers
- A cap sized to a flue tile is the smallest piece of metal on the job; a cover that overhangs the whole chimney face uses far more material and more fabrication.
- Metal specified
- Galvanized is the least expensive and the shortest-lived, stainless costs more and lasts, copper sits above both. The choice trades outlay now against how soon the cap is replaced.
- Stock size versus custom fabrication
- Odd flue dimensions, an irregular crown, or tiles that differ from each other mean a cap made to measure rather than pulled off a shelf.
- Roof pitch, chimney height, and access
- A steep or slick roof, a tall stack, a third storey, or an approach needing staging or roof anchors adds setup before any cap is touched.
- Condition of the crown and flue tile
- A sound surface takes a fastener straight away. A cracked crown or chipped tile may need attention first, or may rule out a fastening method and force a different cap type.
- Removing what is already up there
- A rusted-in cap with seized fasteners, a mortared-on cover, or a previous repair bedded in mastic takes time to get off cleanly.
- Spark arrestor requirements
- Where the screen has to meet a specified opening size and free area for the appliance or the jurisdiction, fewer products qualify.
Common questions
- Do I actually need a chimney cap?
- No code section requires a metal rain cap on every chimney, so be careful with anyone who tells you otherwise. What Washington's residential code does require is the masonry element — a concrete, metal, or stone cap with a drip edge and a caulked bond break around the flue liners, sloped to shed water — which the trade calls the crown. The metal cover over the flue opening is separately named by CSIA as one of four measures against chimney water damage, alongside the crown, the flashing, and waterproofing, and CSIA notes it also keeps birds and animals out and acts as a spark arrestor. Requirements change and depend on the property, so confirm anything code-related with your local building department before work starts.
- Will a chimney cap stop my chimney from leaking?
- Only if the water is coming down the flue. It also enters through the masonry face, a cracked crown, and the roof flashing. The Brick Industry Association states that heavy wind-driven rain is nearly impossible to keep out of a single wythe of brickwork regardless of materials or workmanship, and SaverSystems describes brick and mortar as microscopic capillaries that pull water in by suction and dry by evaporation, with leaks beginning when the masonry never fully dries between wettings. A cap closes one path of several, so ask for the leak to be traced before you buy one as a cure.
- Stainless steel or galvanized — does it matter here?
- It matters more in this climate than in a dry one. Sea-Tac averages 39.34 inches of precipitation a year under NOAA's 1991–2020 Climate Normals, with about three quarters of it falling between October and March, so a cap here stays wet for months at a stretch. The code's spark arrestor clause gives a sense of the difference: it treats 19-gage galvanized steel and thinner 24-gage stainless as equivalent in heat and corrosion resistance. The Brick Industry Association, writing about chimney flashing rather than caps but about the same environment, calls stainless an excellent material, specifies ASTM A240 Type 304, and states that galvanized steel is not recommended.
- What mesh size keeps birds and squirrels out?
- Washington's residential code sets the screen specification where a spark arrestor is installed on a masonry chimney: openings that will not pass a sphere larger than 1/2 inch and will not block a sphere smaller than 3/8 inch, a net free area of at least four times the flue outlet's free area, screen material with heat and corrosion resistance equivalent to 19-gage galvanized or 24-gage stainless steel, and accessibility for cleaning. That window excludes anything larger than a small bird while leaving enough free area that the screen does not choke the flue. Whether a spark arrestor is required at all depends on the jurisdiction and the appliance — confirm with your local building department.
- Can I cap off a fireplace I never use?
- Yes, but it should be ventilated rather than sealed. NPS guidance on controlling unwanted moisture in buildings recommends adding ventilated chimney caps to unused chimneys that collect rainwater; closing a disused flue airtight can trap moisture inside the masonry instead of keeping it out. CSIA also notes that the annual inspection recommendation in NFPA 211 applies to lightly used chimneys too, partly because animals nest in flues that are out of service. Say up front that the flue is unused so the right cap is specified.
- My fireplace smokes on windy days. Will a cap fix that?
- Possibly, if it only happens in wind. A lid interrupts air blowing straight down the opening, and a wind-directional or draft-increasing cap targets that condition specifically. If the fireplace also smokes in still air, the cause is elsewhere — flue sizing, a cold exterior flue, a blinded screen, a partial blockage, or negative pressure inside the house — and a new cap will not change it. Have the flue looked at before buying hardware for a draft problem you have not identified.
