- In mapped flood hazard areas and City land use critical areas the exemption is simply unavailable — which covers parts of the Cedar River corridor, the valley floor, and the steeper slopes.
So repointing forty feet of joints and rebuilding a stack down below the roof line sit at genuinely different places on that scale, and the same two words cover both. A scope written for a Renton address should say which side of the line it lands on.
The Seattle rule you found online is not the rule here
Search for chimney repair rules in this region and you land on Seattle's SDCI Director's Rule 07-2025, which governs unreinforced masonry chimney work inside Seattle — including the requirement that an altered chimney come back as reinforced masonry or be replaced with a factory-built metal chimney. That rule stops at the Seattle city line.
What does carry across is the underlying engineering reality. Renton's own adopted design table assigns the city Seismic Design Category D2, the same category that drives masonry chimney reinforcing and anchorage. The obligation on a Renton stack is real and comparable; the document you comply with and the office you file with are Renton's.
So a repair that crosses from weathering into structure changes character. What to look for
